5th Grade: Pop Art Collage

The 5th grade students learned about Pop Art and looked at many different Pop Artists. They saw the work of Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud, Roy Liechtenstein and Jasper Johns. Pop Art was a movement that started in the 1950’s. Pop art was artwork that contained images of things that were popular such as food, people and objects. Many people thought that Pop art was a form of advertisement. The students also learned that a collage is overlapping many images onto of one another to create a piece of art. Students were able to create their own “Pop Art Collage” using various magazine images. We discussed balance and how to create balance in piece of art. Finally students were able to create patterns using lines, colors and shapes in the background.
