4th Grade Abstract Trees

4th Grade Jelly Fish

The 4th graders watched a video on the Great Barrier Reef and focused on Jellyfish.  They learned lots of fun facts about Jellyfish such as: they don't have a brain, some people eat them for protein, their life span is only a few days to a year, some are bigger than a human while others are as big as a pencil tip, they need salt water to survive, etc.  Students also learned about Analogous color and how artists create value in a piece of art.  Students had to choose analogous colors for their jellyfish.

4th Grade Haunted Victorian House Sculptures

After students studied Victorian Architecture and landscapes using 2-Dimensions, they then got to experiment with creating a 3-Dimensional house sculpture.  We discussed different parts of Architecture that they could use.  We also talked about recycled art and how you can create a piece of art out of just about anything.  Everything used for their sculpture was from recycle materials (mostly cardboard).  When their sculptures were complete I took them outside and spray painted them all black to create UNITY throughout their art.   Finally students were able to had metallic accents to them.

4th Grade Aboriginal Portraits

Aboriginal art originated in Australia over 30,000 years ago.  Many of the aborigines traveled long distances and recorded their travels by using symbols.  The symbols they created using only lines and dots in a repeated pattern. Aboriginal art has many of the earth tone colors because they used to make their paint from materials in nature.  UNITY and REPETITION are seen throughout the aboriginal art we looked at because of the repeated dots used to create symbols.  The students were able to create their own piece of aboriginal art using dots. Students discussed what a portrait is and how it doesn't have to look realistic.  We also talked about how different cultures use different face paints for celebrations and ceremonies.  We also discussed symmetry and students had to us lines, dots and color to create symmetry in their portrait. 

4th Grade Victorian Architecture

The 4^th Grade students learned about Victorian Architecture and the characteristics of a Victorian style home.  Victorian homes where usually at least three stories high, were very large, had tons of windows, dormers, and arches, had large front porches, and either a tower or turret.  Students had to design their own Victorian style home and had to have these characteristics in their home when designing them.  Students also learned what a landscape is and how to create foreground, middle ground and background in their landscape to create depth.  Students were able to add creative details to their landscape.  Finally we talked about how artists create different moods/feelings in their art depending on which colors they use.  Students were able to use the color black to create a more night time/spooky mood in their art. 

4th Grade Perspective Tints & Shades

4th grade students learned about one point perspective and how to create 3-D form on a 2-D surface.  Students put a dot in the center of their cardboard and then drew different geometric shapes around staying close to the edge of the cardboard.  (I have a super sweet lunch lady who saves cardboard from food delivered so I have tons of card board 9 x 12 size).  Students got to choose two different colors to create tints and shades on their forms.  Finally used black paint to fill in background and used black sharpie to out line and add patterns to shapes.  Students really got into this project!

4th Grade Aztec Sun Stone Project

Students studied the Aztecs and also took a look a the Aztec Sun Stone and how it was inspiration for pieces of art.  Students learned how to create Contrast and Value using the Warm and Cool Colors.
