1st Grade Cherry Blossom Scrolls

The 1st Grade students looked at and discussed many different varieties of Asian art. We focused on Asian scrolls. A scroll is a rolled piece of paper which is used to write or paint on to relay information or to be used as decoration. 1st grade students created a decorative scroll with Cherry Blossoms because Cherry Blossoms are popular in Asia. A Cherry Blossom is a type of tree that has lots of little pink flowers on them. In Japan they have an annual celebration to view the Cherry Blossoms. Cherry Blossoms are various colors of pink flowers that bloom only for a couple weeks a year. During this time it is absolutely beautiful because the sidewalks are lined with Cherry Blossom Trees that people are able to walk through to see their beauty. Students were able to view a short video clip to see Cherry Blossom Trees in Japan

  1. I'm curious about your Chinese calligraphy. Do they actually say something? If so, how did you do it (where did you find it)?

Very nice work - I like the 3-dimensional aspect of these.

    1. Hi Phyl,

Yes the Chinese Calligraphy is their names. I had a sheet with the English and Chinese symbols for the entire alphabet. They traced there names and if their name wasn't long enough to fit the paper, I had them repeat their name or start their last name.

  3. They had to choose two colors next to each other on the color wheel for their background. Then used eye droppers and watered down black tempera to create the tree branch. Ripped and scrunched little pieces of pink tissue paper and glued to branch. I had pre-cut pieces of wallpaper they could choose and finally glued on their names in Chinese Calligraphy.

    1. How did you make the back grounds for the trees? What type of paper did you use for the back ground?

      I love these!

    2. I just used 18 X 24 paper cut in 1/2. Students had to choose two colors next to each other on the color where and used tempera cakes to create a nice wash for their backround. Then watered down black tempera squirted out of eye droppers for the tree branch and tissue paper scrunched for the blossoms!
