1st Grade Wildflowers

Students looked at the artwork of Yvonne Coomber and described her art.  Students described her work as, “Colorful, bright and beautiful.”  We had a discussion on what types of things happen in the spring time such as warmer weather, flowers and trees budding, bright skies and animals coming out of hibernation.  Students were able to experiment with the wet on wet watercolor technique for their backgrounds.  We then review the primary colors.  We discussed what a landscape is and how objects in that are closer or in the front of the landscape are larger and as you go back objects get smaller.  This creates depth or distance in a landscape.  Students created depth by using bigger circles in the front and smaller circles as they went farther back.  Students only used the primary colors and were able to review and see how mixing the primary colors they would create the secondary colors.  Lastly students took florescent paint colors and overlapped more circles to create a beautiful wildflower landscape like Yvonne Coomber.

1st Grade Cities

The 1^st Grades students learned what a “skyscraper” is and were able to see a short video clip showing the top ten largest cities in the world.  After the video we had a discussion on different shapes they saw.  We discussed how buildings in large city are very close to each other and sometimes look like they overlap each other.  Students compared the different between 2-D shapes and 3-D forms.  Students were able to use rules to create four 3-D buildings for their city.  We discussed the different geometric shapes and students had to use these shapes to add windows to their buildings.  Students used markers and water to color their buildings.  Finally we read the book, Press Here, by Herve Tullet and were able to review the Primary and Secondary colors.  Students were only given the primary color oil crayons to create a firework display in their sky.  Students were able to experiment with mixing the oil crayons to create the secondary colors.

 

 

4th Grade Egyptian Portraits

5th Grade American Flags

The 5th grader's have an annual Road To Revolution Presentation that the put on at our school.  The 5th graders dress up in costumes and put on various presentations, power points, skits about the American Revolution.  So in Art Class we created Flag collages to decorate the commons for their presentations.  We brainstormed  words for "What it means to be an American".  Students cut words out of magazines and then added handwritten words into their space.  We discussed Variety and how variety makes a piece of art more interesting.  So students used different fonts, sizes and different directions to add/write their words. The 2nd day students add the transparent paint (modge podge mixed with tempera paint) to create the American Flag.

4th Grade Masks

The 4^th grade students looked at and studied many different types of masks.  We discussed the difference between symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance.  Symmetrical balance is when the mask is exactly the same on both sides, and asymmetrical balance is when the two sides are different.  We also talked about the difference between 3-Dimensional and 2-Dimensional art.  The students were able to create their own unique design for their mask using either symmetrical or asymmetrical balance.  Finally students were able to add many fun details to create their 3-D Mask.
