3rd Grade Aboriginal Art

 Aboriginal art originated in Australia over 30,000 years ago.  Many of the aborigines traveled long distances and recorded their travels by using symbols.  The symbols they created using only lines and dots in a repeated pattern. Aboriginal art has many of the earth tone colors because they used to make their paint from materials in nature.  UNITY and REPETITION are seen throughout the aboriginal art we looked at because of the repeated dots used to create symbols.  The students were able to create their own piece of aboriginal art using dots and aboriginal symbols and earth tone colors!

Gustav Klimt Trees

Gustav Klimt was an amazing artist!  He was born and lived in Vienna, Austria with his family.  His father was a gold carver and engraver.  He had two brothers and four sisters.  His family did not have a lot of money growing up, so he was able to get a scholarship to attend the Vienna School of Decorative arts.   He did this at the age of 14 for seven years.   When he finished school he opened his own studio with a friend and one of his brothers, and they began to paint murals.  They started to get paid for their work and soon Klimt began to become recognized as an artist.  He started to paint portraits of women with elaborate gowns and blankets as well as landscapes.  His father’s work also influenced his art because he began to use the color gold in many of his paintings. He used a lot of organic and geometric shapes, lines and patterns.  Students learned the difference between organic and geometric shape and found examples of each in Klimt’s art. Gustav Klimt is one of the few artists we’ve studied that actually sold his artwork to make a living!

3rd Grade Weavings

The 3rd Grade students studied Mexican art and focused on their textiles.  Students learned what a loom is and learned about the weaving process.  Some classes wove on a paper plate and some classes wove on a cardboard loom.  Students had to choose different colors/textures to create a beautiful textile piece of art.

3rd Grade Soccer

I always collaborate with the music teacher so that their is artwork in the commons that relates the concert theme.  This year 3rd and 5th Grades sang songs about soccer.  They learned about Geometric Shapes (Pentagons/Hexagons) and how to create value using Analogous colors.  SO FUN!
