5th Grade: Owls
The 5th grade students learned about VALUE. VALUE is going from light to dark with any color. If you add white to a color you get lighter which is called a TINT. If you add black to a color you get a darker which is called a SHADE. Artists add value to an object to make in look 3-dimensional on a flat, 2-dimensional surface. The 5th grade students were able to choose a color of their choice for their background and create a value scale to represent the light coming from the moon. Finally they were able to add a silhouette of a tree and owl to complete their composition.
Hi! This is a great lesson! I'd like to do something like this when we have our half days at the end of October (it feels "halloween-y" while still enforcing the elements of art. Did you mask off the "moon" and wait until the value scale dried to do the branch and owl? Any other tips or tricks on walking them through this? (PS I also love your Monet lesson! Your students clearly have a great teacher to produce such talented works.) :D
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI love this idea for owls.... I am helping my daughters class do a project on owls. I thought yours looked so cute. Can you tell me the steps to make it and what you used for the silhouette (black) part. Did you use paint or markers?
Thank you so much for your help!!

What medium did you use for your tiny and shades? I can't tell for sure if it is paint or oil pastel? Also wondering if the moon was masked?
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I think this is a great way for the students to learn about the visual element of Value. I also wondered how they were able to keep such a perfect white circle for the moon? And the branches are pretty intricate. How were you able io get them to accomplish that? I think the kids I teach in the after school program will love this!
