5th Grade Aboriginal Sculptures


Aboriginal art originates from Australia over 30,000 years ago.  Aborigines began painting on rocks and inside caves with earth tone or neutral colors.  Students learned that back then they couldn’t go to the store to buy paint; they had to find things in nature to make their own paint.  Today Aboriginal Art has three main characteristics, dots, symbols and/or animals.  Aborigines filled their space and did not leave any negative (empty space) in their art.  The Aborigines used symbols in their art to document their travels and experiences.  Students learned that different countries/cultures have different meanings for different symbols.   Students were also introduced to REPITION and UNITY and how to create/find that in a piece of art.  The 5th grade students review the difference between 2-D and 3-D art.  We also talked about Abstract Art and what it means.  Students were able to create sculpture using a hanger, nylon and block of wood.  Students could choose any colors of their choice but had to fill their sculpture with dots and symbols to represent Aboriginal Art.

  1. This is a great twist on the usual hanger lesson. I LOVE the aboriginal paint, especially the last photo where the artist extended the dots onto the base. The painted trim directly over the wire is a nice.

  2. Are the nylons painted prior to adding dot patterns? They seem to be opaque and a stretched nylon would be translucent...Very cool sculpture activity.

  3. I love this 3 d art and would like to have my pre-k students create them. I would like some info so that I might help my students create this type of art. I firmly believe that art is the most important subject I can introduce to my students, I want them to have the art opportunities that I did not have. Please send me any ideas!

  4. I had 2 X 4's cut and pre drilled with two holes. The students each got a wire hanger and had to untwist it (might be to hard for pre-k's) then they bent the wire into the shape and stuck in holes. I then hot glued. The put a nylon over and then added a layer of glue. Next class they pick a base color and gave two coats. Finally they had q-tips to create the dot patterns.

  5. Did you use Art Paste for the glue...or what kind did you use? Also, did you use a certain type of nylon or something from the Dollar Store? Also, tempura paint or Acrylic???? Fantastic...my students would LOVE this! Thanks for posting.
